In the world of typography there seems to be a fascination with the ampersand. It’s a whimisical little creature that can be constructed in countless different ways. Illustrator and graphic designer Dan Beckemeyer made these ampersands that represent food combinations. I’m getting kind of hungry now…
Swedish artist Anders Krisar made these unique (and slightly disturbing) sculptures of human torsos and arms. They’re really unlike anything I’ve seen before, especially the “woven” one.

UK-based artist Kevin Hunt’s Garden Furniture alters static pieces of furniture and turns them into growing, living pieces of sculpture. The combination of permanent and ephemeral materials creates a unique piece of art that changes over time.
This table by Bram Hendriks utilitzes the natural forms of the wood to create a unique table unlike anything I’ve seen before.
Let’s face it, there are few things less appealing than a folding chair, at least from a design standpoint. But that’s why I like Tanya Aguiniga’s chairs so much. She’s taken boring folding chairs and covered them in a bright colored felt. Suddenly folding chairs don’t look like such a faux-pas, huh? I love seeing people that take ordinary objects and turn them into stunning works of art. Tanya also has made some really cool rope bracelets that are worth checking out too.
Design Glut is a Brooklyn-based design studio founded by Pratt graduates Liz Kinnmark and Kegan Fisher. The duo has created unique objects that both whimsical and functional. Design Glut hasn’t been around for a long time (it started in April 2008), but their cool products have already gained a lot of attention and grace the shelves of places like the MoMA Design Store. Here are a few of their creations that I absolutely love. Take a look at their online store to see more.
These colorful and patterned deer heads by Etsy seller rubyslounge are really neat. The papered, resin deer heads come in a whole slew of colors and patterns, so be sure to check out her store to see more. Also, it’s worth noting that rubyslounge has a disclaimer that says, “No deer was hurt in the making of this craft!”.
A few weeks ago I was in Decorah, Iowa and I came across this funny fire hydrant with eyes. I would love to see a whole army of these little guys around NYC. Simple but funny. It’s amazing what a pair of eyes will do!
