In honor of America’s independence day, here’s a photo I took last weekend of the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry. Happy Fourth of July!

I don’t know why, but I am kind of obsessed with unique business cards. The latest card I’ve been geeking out over is by Seattle-based illustrator Matthew Hollister, which he designed to resemble a King County Metro transfer pass.

Living in New York is an interesting experience to say the least. The smells of garbage cooking in the summer sun, close encounters with errant pigeons, and navigating between a pack of slow tourists are some of the things that give the Big Apple its charm. My friend Heidi Trost, of HT Design Studio, says, “Sometimes it is difficult to put into words the people, culture, and randomness one can experience in New York City. When we find we are horrified, disgusted, delighted or just generally baffled, the usual response is only in New York!” Heidi has been turning her musings on NYC into funny, typographic illustrations in a series called Only In New York. Here are a few of my favorites.

So this is the second time I’ve written about a clever project by Rethink, the Toronto-based ad agency. But seriously, these folks come up with some cool things. This isn’t exactly new, but I hadn’t seen it before so I figured it was worth posting. To promote ICOGRADA’s Design Week 2010 conference in Vancouver, Rethink created this animation by designing over 2,200 custom “bills” and feeding them through a money counter. It’s the flip book of the future! You can watch the video of their animation at the end of this post.

This ain’t your grandmother’s cross stitching! Rather, it’s a recent piece by Boston-based graphic designer and cross-stitching enthusiast Martha Carl. I love seeing “traditional” crafts like cross-stitch being adopted by a new breed of irreverent and contemporary crafters. If you’re into that sort of thing then I’d recommend checking out a Tumblr blog called Craft or Die and the Subversive Cross Stitch group on Flickr.
